Winter Films at Great Neck Arts Center

Happenings in North Hempstead.

Film lovers take note. The Winter Film Series at the Great Neck Arts Center is previewing new independent films and studio releases, followed by Q&As with filmmakers and industry professionals.  

Upcoming films include:

  • Dec. 12: Just A Sigh, directed by Jérôme Bonnell. France, 2013, 104 min. In English and French with subtitles. The film stars Gabriel Byrne and Emmanuelle Devos, and tells the story of a stage actress (Devos) in France who discovers romance with an English man (Byrne). An official selection of the Tribeca Film Festival, the film was highlighted by Le Monde  as “[a]dmirably written,” and “delicately directed.”
  • Jan. 9: To be announced.
  • Jan. 23: “The Zigzag Kid,” directed by Vincent Bal. Netherlands/Belgium, 2012, 95 min. In Dutch, English and French with subtitles, with Isabella Rossellini. This comedy focuses on an adolescent boy who wants to be a detective like his father, but somehow trouble always ensues. Based on the novel by David Grossman, the film was featured in the New York Jewish Film Festival.
  • Jan. 30: “Le Week-end,”directed by Roger Michell. UK, 2013, 93 min. The comedy drama, starring Jim Broadbent, Lindsay Duncan, and Jeff Goldblum, tells the tale of a middle-age couple  (Broadbent and Duncan) in Paris for a long weekend. Though they are there to work on their relationship, everything changes when an old friend (Goldblum) shows up. The Telegraph described the film as “beautifully executed.” The film is an official selection of the 2013 New York Film Festival

If you go: Screenings take place at Bow Tie Squire Cinemas, 115 Middle Neck Road, Great Neck at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7 p.m. for subscribers and 7:15 p.m. for individual ticket holders. Individual tickets are $15 ($10 for students) when purchased in advance and $20 at the door. Learn more
