Local Cab Companies to Offer Free Rides Throughout Holidays

Holiday Free Ride Initiative aimed at helping curb alcohol-related accidents and deaths.

Local taxi companies are currently giving free rides to those who need a ride home in an effort to deter Driving While Intoxicated and prevent holiday celebrations from ending in tragedy or arrest. They will continue to offer free rides through Jan. 1, 2011.

"The local taxi companies providing free rides this holiday season truly embody the spirit and generosity we hope to endear," said County Executive Ed Mangano. "Don't drink and drive…instead, take the free ride."

Nassau County Police Commissioner Lawrence Mulvey supports these efforts and believes the public should be aware of this generous offer of public service.

"If any of our residents and customers need a free ride home, after drinking at a local tavern, bar, restaurant or catering hall, through Jan. 1, 2011, call 326-9090," Mulvey stated. "Your local taxi companies throughout Nassau and Eastern Queens, are offering free rides, in an effort to prevent drunk driving, which could be deadly."

Participating providers include:

  •  Deluxe Transportation (Port Washington)
  •  Ollie's Taxi & Airport Service
  •  All Island Transportation (Locations in Garden City, Lynbrook, Merrick, Mineola and Rockville Centre)
  •  Taxi Latino
  •  Luxury Transportation
  •  Glen Belle Car Service

"I am pleased to support and promote this generous offer of public service by the local taxi companies listed above," said Nassau County Police Commissioner Lawrence W. Mulvey. "There is no acceptable excuse for DWI with this offer of a free ride.  If you do so in Nassau County, you will be arrested."

Too many people, despite having too much to drink, are reluctant to give up his or her keys, or have no way to get back to their cars the next day. These taxi companies, will also give you a free ride back to the driver's car the next day.

"With the free rides there is no excuse for driving while intoxicated and the free rides are a great public service that will prevent holiday celebrations from ending in tragedy or arrest," said Leg. Wayne Wink (D - Roslyn). "Don't drink and drive take the free ride and get home safely."

"We are offering this service because we want our customers and the community to enjoy the holidays and stay safe, too," said Ray Bagnato, sales manager at Deluxe Transportation.

"We want all or our residents and customers to be safe over the holiday season," said Marianne Blessinger, president of Ollie's Taxi and Airport Service. "During this joyous time of year, our goal is to prevent or stop any horrible tragedies. If we can avoid one accident or someone from being injured it is well worth it. Don't drink and drive, let your transportation companies be your designated driver and keep you safe."

I hope the closing is only temporary. I purchased milk and other items from Dairy Barn for manyRead More years. Always got good quality products. Never had a problem.

With the loss of "D-Barn", the lack of a drive-through convenience store creates a voidRead More worth filling.

There was very little publicity about the budget this year. I was disappointed that the increase wasRead More over 3.5 percent. We still haven't addressed the salary issues and maybe we never will. Until the salary and benefit package is decreased, there will never be a reduction in the cost of education in Port Washinton.

What does it matter? No matter what you do, the budget increase will pass. Just empty your pocketsRead More and move on.

if we are going to sell off our 40 spot lot why not advocate for the LIRR to chip in and helpRead More building the 2 or 3 story parking lot on Haven? with more trains and more population we need more parking. we are fooling ourselves that this is not a "Hicksville" type train station. we are a main hub and it needs a substantial parking lot that will help commuter parking and help retail parking in the main lots off of main street. anyone who does not want that parking lot built needs to really ask themselves why not. if we can build a new car wash on a main cut through street for no reason we can get this done with the same traffic nightmares!!! BTW during construction which im sure will take at least a year. where will those people park? in the other lots, so us who take the 808 train will get screwed bc we will not have a place to park now.
Nassau Taxpayer May 23, 2013 at 12:52 pm
Good spot for a multi-story municipal/LIRR garage, given the height of terrain behind it.

I agree. This lot should be open all the time. Maybe there is a potential liability issue butRead More let's see if it can be worked out.
