Patch Picks: Port goes Green for St. Patrick's Day

A Leprechaun's picks for celebrating and shopping around town.

Here are some  eco-friendly tips for celebrating the "green" in St. Patrick's Day. Wear something green, a tee shirt with a message or perhaps emeralds. Even your dog will enjoy going for a walk sporting a green bandanna while you search for Port Washington's four leaf clover patches.

Visit and enjoy a plate of corned beef and cabbage or cook some at home. Try some Irish spirits or beer on tap and sing some Irish songs while you are there. Jason and Russell, fiddle and guitar players will be featured at . will be presenting traditional Irish music by "Two Too Many" at lunch and dinner.    

The Leprechaun suggests starting your day by putting a bit of Bailey's Irish Cream in your hot oatmeal – but not your children's.  Bake or buy shamrock shaped cookies with green sugar sprinkles and Irish Soda bread at B. Word is that they will also have Bailey's Irish Cream cake ready to go. Organize a pub crawl for your friends and stop by Port Washington's many venues at night – but don't drink and drive. Ask if they serve "green organic beer."

It's often said that everyone is Irish on St. Patrick's Day, so get in the spirit and catch a performance of traditional step dancers from the Donny Golden School of Dance at Sullivans  Quay. Finn MacCool's has entertainment from the Petri School of Dance. Both performances take place at 2 p.m. on March 17.

Go to a St.Patrick's Day parade at a nearby town or view it on TV.Watch a movie about Ireland – it's as simple as  borrowing a DVD  from the collection. Listen to Celtic music – the offers a selection. Or pick up a fiddle, flute or bodhran and create your  own.

Dive deeper into the culture of the Emerald Isle and become a Celtic storyteller and entertain your family and friends. The library has a great collection of related books to loan.  Explore the shops in town for some entertaining gifts like Celtic fairy tales or a travel guide book about Ireland to give to your children or yourself that can be enjoyed all year round but skip the stuff like blow-up  inflatable lawn decorations that just end up in landfills.  Decorate your home with some unique green accessories from . Create a bouquet of flowers by mingling Bells of Ireland with fancy chartreuse mums and green carnations from .
