Stop & Shop Facing Possible Strike

More than 1,000 workers could walk off the job Monday.

A possible strike at Stop & Shop supermarkets has been delayed until Monday.

Long Island Business News (subscription required) reported that an emergency union meeting on Thursday to discuss a possible strike was delayed. Should workers next week vote to strike, about 1,100 meat, seafood and deli workers at Stop & Shop stores would take part in “job actions” against the grocery store chain, which has a location in West Islip.

The workers are part of United Food and Commercial Workers Local 342.

Kate Meckler, director of communications for the union, said workers would like to come to a fair agreement and have membership vote on a new contract as soon as possible.

“But until Stop & Shop proves that they are serious about taking care of their workers, we will remain on track to hold a strike vote,” she said.

Why in the hell are Deli workers unionized?

Why not? I bagged groceries at Stop & Shop 30 years ago and had to join the union.

Because if labor isn't organized you have underpaid workers and inferior employees.

This country was built on Unions. Those who live with their heads up at the Miracle Mile would never know that history.

Not a big fan of Stop & Shop since they replaced most of the cashiers with self-service checkouts
Perhaps this is the future in retail.....

Particularly out of line since it's a shared-use puddle for camp groups splashing, not a good poolRead More venue for individuals swimming.

The TONH should be under some investigation for charging such a high fee for a very short summerRead More season. You lose most of june and the pool closes in early September. Better off paying as you go just purchase the parking permit which is good at the Manorhaven Pool and the Harbor beach. Stop buying a season pass in protest to the yearly excessive price increase.

And speaking of investigations, what's up with Jonny's Roslyn CC fiasco?

Contact the Village and the water district, it's probably a problem with a pipe on your street.
