When it comes to back-to-school shopping, consumers are expected to spend more in 2012 than they did a year ago. However, with warm summer temperatures lingering, shoppers may not be ready for wardrobe shopping just yet.
That’s according to a study recently released by , a research firm headquartered in Port Washington.
“Retailers should plan to see a rise in sales when the temperature drops,” said Marshal Cohen, the firm’s chief industry analyst, in a statement. “The summer heat wave in much of the country is a possible contributor to the delay in back-to-school shopping.”
The study was a based on a poll of 2,500 members of the firm’s online consumer panel, which surveyed adults in the United States ages 18 and older. The survey was conducted from July 2-10.
Cohen predicted that shoppers would first stock up on school supplies and electronics.
"And when school is back in session apparel and footwear will show some true promise, driving shoppers to department, sporting goods, and specialty stores," he added.
Students are expected to influence shopping decisions, looking for trendy and fashionable items, parents will be seeking value.
Sounds fairly old school.
