'Suddenly Solo' Offers Advice for Widowed, Divorced Men

2 Sands Point authors hold event at Dolphin Bookshop Wednesday.

Don’t be surprised Wednesday if you happen upon a meet-the-author event at 2 p.m. at Dolphin Bookshop and find an NBC Today Show crew busy at work.

They will be shooting a segment on “Suddenly Solo - A Lifestyle Roadmap for the Divorced or Widowed Man” written by Harold Spielman and Marc Silbert, both of them Sands Point residents, Silbert said.

The book and accompanying website, SuddenlySolo.org feature the experiences and thoughts of Baby Boomers ages 60 and older.

"When my wife passed away a few years ago I realized that there was very little available guidance out there for men in my position," said Spielman, the founder of the organization.

"After years in a relationship you are suddenly set adrift, not knowing how to deal with even the simplest chores like preparing a meal or getting your shirts done,” he added. “Even more challenging is understanding the new world of social relationships that has changed markedly since we were young men. The guide and website are aimed at giving you an edge in everything from selecting a microwave oven to online dating."

Much of the research stems from interviews with more than 1,600 men and women, according to a press release. The website addresses sex and relationships, solo living, and hot topics, movie reviews, lifestyle interviews all figure prominently on the site. The website also looks at health, finance and “single-man” recipes.  And in “Ask Hal,” Spielman answers reader questions, basing his responses on his experiences and data.
