Thanksgiving in Port Washington

What you need to know for Thursday.

Happy Thanksgiving, Port Washington.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, there is much to be grateful for.

Today is a national holiday, which means all federal, state and local government offices are closed. Banks and the financial markets are closed. There is no postal delivery.

But if you're heading to the big parade in Manhattan, the Long Island Rail Road is operating on a holiday schedule, but has 22 additional trains systemwide for those headed to and from the parade. Off peak fares apply Thursday as well as Friday, when the LIRR will operate on a near normal weekday schedule. Extra cars are being added to trains.

The Community Chest of Port Washington's Thanksgiving Turkey Trot is Thursday morning. Find about road closings.

Most supermarkets in Port Washington are open Thursday morning but will close by mid-afternoon. King Kullen, for example, is open from 7 a.m.-3 p.m.

Also some area businesses are open, including Port Washington Diner and Sunny Nail Spa. Main Street Bakery & Cafe is open till 1 p.m. And Sands Point Preserve is offering free admission on all day as a "thank you" to the community.

Most fine dining restaurants are closed in Port Washington this evening.

Did we leave you out? We didn't mean to. If your business is open on Thursday let us know. Leave a note in the comments section below and include your hours of operation.
