Was There Life Before Facebook?

As founder Mark Zuckerberg prepares to make a rare public appearance at TechCrunch Disrupt, we'd love to know what got you to join the party in the first place.

Elusive Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg will speak Tuesday at TechCrunch Disrupt, his first public speech since the company's lackluster initial public offering.

Shares of the social media giant's stock have fallen more than 50 percent since the IPO, though Facebook's hulking popularity still has it well on top of other networking sites online. Who isn't on Facebook these days anyway?

Since the tech world will focus on Zuckerberg at 2 p.m., we'd love to hear what locals have to say about Facebook. Do you remember why you first signed up? Do you have any stories of how the platform helped you in your community? Any complaints (dare we bring up Timeline)?

Share them in the comments below.

I joined in 2007 -- is it five years already? -- after reading about it in a number of publications as well as various sites, but didn't start actually using it until the following year. Life before Facebook? Well, considering that until I checked my timeline before responding to this article I had no idea that half a decade had somehow passed, I suppose that tells you just how caught up in it a person can get. The positive: It makes the world a much smaller and friendlier place. The negative: Have I actually spent a good part of five years piddling my time away? Food for thought.
