Getting High Naturally At Practice

Life is a practice, such is the pearl behind the newly opened yoga and wellness space Practice in Roslyn, NY. Co-founder Dr. Lisa Langer hopes to “encourage each individual to bring mindfulness to their life.”

We are a constant work in progress and every minute and every breath you are alive is a second chance for a new more mindful experience.

Tommy Rosen and Kia Miller flew in from Los Angeles to share their Practice points with their workshop entitled Getting High At Practice: Yoga, Meditation and the Infinite Farmacy Within, reinforcing the pearl that the greatest healer lies within.

Tommy Rosen is best known for his work on Recovery from addiction. Having faced adversity and many addictive behaviors followed by a degenerative disc in his back diagnosed as chronic, Tommy battled a long road to recovery.

Like many others his road began by turning his compass inward and finding a Guru, Guru Prem in Beverly Hills. Through the study of yoga and Kundalini meditation, Tommy healed his back and reconnected with his center.

Great teachers help us access our innate powers. The tide is turning towards welcoming Eastern modalities into Western medicine.  Wellness centers like Practice, are bringing these teachers and powerful tools into the community.

We are still slow to provide addiction treatments not when Tommy says that "80% of the United States Prison population is comprised of persons who committed alcohol and drug related offenses."

Something is amiss.

De-stigmatizing addiction is a foremost priority.  As is making more recovery programs affordable and accessible. Alcoholics Anonymous is one such program which most recovering addicts praise, however, it is not the only method.

Someone will be there to help you when you fall. That person in the end, is ultimately you. Every choice along the way is yours to make. We all tread down similar pathways. We all have addictions of one kind or another.

Tommy identifies 5 major areas of addictions – Drugs (illicit, cocaine, marijuana, prescription), Alcohol (which is so readily prevalent in society), Food (anorexia, bulimia, obesity, emotional eating), Sex and Money (gambling, shopping, debt).

All are lifestyle choices. Each stemming from a dysfunctional aspect of our relationship to ourselves. Tommy says, “addictions are triggered by 4 main aggravating factors – self doubt, negative thinking, procrastination and resentment.”

When we go into those dark nights of the soul we concoct a perfect cocktail for self destruction. The darker you journey, the more your addictions feed off of your miserable solace until you feel your only connection to any happiness in this life is through your addiction of choice.

The more you exact your beliefs and heal your relationship with each area of addiction (eat organic fruits and vegetables, respect your budget, channel sexual energy into creative endeavors), or rule them out completely (give up drugs and alcohol), the deeper into your own reserve you will dive and heal. Luckily, there is a vast wealth of spiritual tools available to help you practice.

Yoga, Meditation, Family Constellation, chanting, are a few ancient practices that guide you within. Your energy, Prana, Chi and overall life force will refresh and strengthen as you continue your practice.

It all begins with a breath, as Tommy’s Guru says “you are born on an inhale and you die on an exhale.”  The 12 Step Program believes in “one day at a time” and Tommy breaks it down even further into “1 conscious breath at a time.”

Kia believes in focusing on the subtleties of the mind and body movements to access your core. How you focus and what you take in with each breathe will gauge your attunement to and ability to participate more fully in the world. The deeper you go with your body and breath work the more expansive you become (without the assistance of mind altering drugs).

For Tommy, his dedicated spiritual practice of yoga and Kundalini meditation helped him release the addictive behaviors of the past which numbed him, like so many others, from the pain, grief and devastating beauty of this world.

He chose to change his dial, just as you would on your radio. As Tommy says, “you can choose to tune into the frequency of addiction or change the station to rock to the frequency of recovery.”

From here, you can paint your life exactly how you wish.

That my friends, is a practice worth embracing.
