Heavy Storms Hit Port Washington

Flooding, LIRR delays, and a home reportedly struck by lightening.

Update: Sheer volume of water from a torrential downpour and thunderstorms overwhelmed drainage on some local roads, creating localized flooding. 

Just after 6 p.m. the Long Island Rail Road reported that train service on the Port Washington line is suspended temporarily in both directions. By 6:40 p.m., however, limited eastbound service was restored. 

In Port Washington, one home on Herbert Avenue was reportedly hit by lightning at about 4:30 p.m., though there was no damage, and no injuries.

"We felt the loud crash and then my radio turned on – it won't turn off," said the homeowner, Jeannine Daly. "Then my neighbor phoned to see if we were alright because she saw a big bolt of lightning come down and hit our roof."

Flooding was seen on Mill Pond Road and Shore Road, Eastern Crest, and other parts of Port Washington.

The National Weather Service said the storm is moving east. It also cautions against driving into areas where water covers the roadway as the water may be too deep to cross safely. Instead, move to higher ground,
