Four of Five Cases on ’07 Lab Explosion Settled

Jurors hear opening remarks, but teacher doesn't testify.

Four of the five cases related to a 2007 explosion in a science lab were settled Tuesday afternoon, attorneys said.

Noting that the settlement was confidential, Jeffrey Bloom, the attorney representing former Schreiber High School student Stephen Nash, who graduated in 2009, declined to comment on the amounts involved in his cases.

The settlements came just hours after the nine-person jury heard opening remarks from attorneys representing Stephen Nash, his classmate James Krellenstein and their respective mothers, as well the school district. Phyllis Serfaty, the science research teacher expected to testify Tuesday, was not called to the stand.

The only case still waiting to move forward is the lawsuit in which James Krellenstein is suing the school district, his attorney said. He could not comment on when more progress would occur.

On April 12, 2007, Nash and Krellenstein were in a classroom laboratory at the high school when . Shortly before the explosion, Serfaty, who had been supervising the students, allegedly stepped out of the room to buy food from a nearby eatery. Serfaty has since retired from the district.
