Girl Scouts to Help Stock Food Pantries in Port Washington

The event takes place at 2 supermarkets on Saturday.

The Port Washington Association Girl Scouts will help stock local food pantries by collecting 100 non-perishable food items from each troop in order to reach their goal of 3,000 total items to be donated. The 9th Grade Senior Troops are organizing the event, which coincides with the Girl Scouts 100th anniversary, and are challenging the Port Washington Association to fill the now nearly depleted local food pantries.

The two food pantries at St. Peter's of Alcantara and Our Lady of Fatima support the entire Port Washington community and the 25 religious organizations in town. The pantries are critically low with many people coming in as a result of Hurricane Sandy and little to no donations being made.

The Girl Scouts will be collecting the items in orange shopping bags, which the food pantries are hoping will become a symbol for helping your neighbor. Items will be collected from neighbors, their own pantries, and booths at Stop & Shop and King Kullen. Particular items needed include canned fruit, tuna, cereal, oil, mac and cheese, and small bags of rice, soup and dried beans.
