Halloween Parades Slated for New Salem, Parent Resource Center

Get ready for a weekend filled with all things Halloween.

Halloween-loving New Salem children and their friends are getting their costumes ready for the venerable neighborhood Halloween parade scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 30. The parade, to be followed by edible treats for participants, takes  place from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. The parade begins at the corner of  Salem Lane and Crestwood Road and ends at the corner of Colby Road and Plymouth Road. The rain date is Sunday, Oct. 31 from 2 p.m. to  4 p.m. – same route.

No one is quite sure when the first New Salem Halloween parade took place, but every year there are grandparents on hand who remember when their grandparents watched them show off their scary creations. Most long-time residents believe New Salem parading began shortly after World War II, as most New Salem house were built between 1938 and 1943.

Many other Halloween celebrations for children and the young-at-heart will be taking place in Port Washington. The Parent Resource Center will hold a Halloween festival complete with pony cart rides, pumpkins and music on Saturday, Oct. 30, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
