Holiday Guide 2012: Events in North Hempstead

Don't miss the festivities.

Looking for festive activities to round out your holiday celebrations? Here are some events taking place in North Hempstead. 

On Wednesday, Dec. 12, 6:15-7 p.m. Chanukkah Song and Story Time at Dolphin Bookshop. Latkes, songs, stories and more. Stay to do your holiday shopping from 7:00-9:00p.m., and RSNS will receive 10 percent of all sales.

On Friday, Dec. 14, see "Thomas Kinkade’s Christmas Cottage" (PG) at the Hillside Library in New Hyde Park. This movie tells the tale of the renowned Painter of Light, Thomas Kinkade, who was a young college student when his treasured childhood home was threatened by foreclosure. With the guidance of his mentor and neighbor, Thomas rediscovered his talents as a painter when he accepted a job painting a mural of his small, idyllic hometown – and helped his hometown discover the true meaning of Christmas while saving his own home at the same time.

Enjoy the winter wonderland celebration at Clark Botanic Garden in Albertson, bringing together various faiths, cultures and histories. On Saturday and Sunday, Dec.15-16 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m., there will be special activities for children, including train displays, nature crafts, holiday readings and more. The garden will feature a lighted landscape and an indoor holiday train display from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. through Dec. 14. Admission to Winter Wonderland is free. On Sunday, Dec. 16, at 4:30 pm the choir of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Port Washington will present its 12th annual performance of Handel's Messiah, including a 13-piece orchestra. Featured soloists: Maria Whisenend, soprano; Deborah Berruete-Fuhrman, mezzo-soprano; David Reck, tenor; and Daniel Klein, bass. St. Stephen's minister of music, Mark van Schenkhof of Port Washington, will conduct the St. Stephen's choir. Admission is free but space is limited, so arrive early to ensure seating.

Catch Holiday Dreams on Ice, an Olympic Ice Show starring two-time Olympian Johnny Weir and Long Island’s own Olympian Emily Hughes is skating into Long Island’s Christopher Morley Park in Roslyn on Sunday, Dec. 16, at 7 p.m. The show also features Olympian, U.S. National Champion and World Bronze Medalist Nicole Bobek, Two-Time U.S. National Bronze Medalist Ross Miner, Ice Dancing U.S. National Bronze Medalists Madison Hubbell and Zach Donahue, U.S. Junior National Champion and World Junior Medalist Jason Brown, U.S. Junior National Champion Max Aaron and National Competitor Samantha Cesario.  Presented by JEGS, this holiday show will offer young skaters from the area the chance to skate in the show on the same ice as their Olympic heroes.  Ticket information is available at www.HolidayDreamsOnIce.com.

On Friday, Dec. 21, enjoy an evening of holiday jazz at Dolphin Bookshop Cafe.
