LWV to Explore LI Water Protection at Port Library Discussion

"Are We Protecting Our Water on Long Island? The Answer Should Worry You" to be discssed June 19.

The League of Women Voters of Port Washington-Manhasset and the Port Washington Public Library invite the public to explore the topic, “Are We Protecting Our Water on Long Island? The Answer Should Worry You” at the League’s annual meeting on Wednesday, June 19, at the library, 1 Library Drive, from 1 to 3 p.m..

According to a report recently released by the Long Island Water Conference, a coalition of LI organizations concerned about the quality and quantity of water on LI, we need to act quickly to protect and manage the water quality and quantity in the aquifers that lie beneath all of LI. They are our only source of non-recreational water. To meet our population’s growing demand, at least 100 additional wells will be needed to pump water from these aquifers within the next 20 years; and there is currently no professional entity overseeing the management of that water or its wells.

Panelists who will share their knowledge of these problems and recommendations for solutions are Sarah Meyland, JD, professor and Director of the NY Institute of Technology’s Center for Water Resources Management; Fred Stumm, PhD, from the US Geological Survey; James Kelly, Adjunct Professor at St. Joseph’s College in Suffolk County; and Judi Bosworth, Nassau County Legislator.

The program is open to the public. Coffee and dessert will be served.
