Long Island was busy this week; here are a few stories you may have missed.

The Huntington said Tuesday that it has recently had to replace about 20 manhole covers that have been stolen.

 The department said that in addition to creating serious driving hazards, replacing each manhole cover costs about $400 to replace, not counting labor costs.

Though no longer an uncommon occurrence each summer, a streak of red tide hit local waters as early as last week, a premature showing from the algal bloom that officials say is likely responsible for a fish kill in an Aquebogue creek.

A spokesman with the Department of Environmental Conservation stated on Thursday that on Aug. 2, dead killifish, snappers, and black sea bass — all with a coating of "orange slime" — were reported at Cases Creek in Aquebogue.

The report, which is "almost certainly" red tide according to the DEC, came earlier in the summer than typical occurrences — and bodes for a summer where locals will likely see the dark algae in higher quantities across the East End.

The regional contest was held in at the Museum of Natural History in Manhattan Thursday. Four regional winners were there to compete in the Downstate championship.

A panel of judges voted Plainview the winner, beating out the water of New York City, Westchester and the Suffolk Water Authority.

The TONH should be under some investigation for charging such a high fee for a very short summerRead More season. You lose most of june and the pool closes in early September. Better off paying as you go just purchase the parking permit which is good at the Manorhaven Pool and the Harbor beach. Stop buying a season pass in protest to the yearly excessive price increase.

We have looked forward every year to joining the pool the new pool was a waist of money I want theRead More old pool back my kids hate it it constantly closes because little kids vomit and have accidents it's a giant kid pool there is no room to swim and it's not deep enough this was a great community place to gather and socialize now older kids don't want to go and have one less place to go for the summer good job
