The City of Long Beach’s prior Republican administration poorly mismanaged the municipality’s finances, creating an $18 million multi-year deficit while depleting $21 million in rainy day funds, according to an audit report State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli released last week.

When the alarm sounds, firefighters spring into action, and heat waves simply can't slow them down. Heat exhaustion is a common occurrence as intense temperatures and high humidity make it more difficult for firefighters to do their jobs safely. East Hampton Fire Department Chief Thomas Bono said making sure his firefighters don't over exert themselves is a constant worry for him on the scene of fires when the temperature spikes.

'Operation Puppy Lift' Rescues 14

Puppies facing a life of hunger, homelessness, and death were given a second chance on the East End recently. Calverton's Kent Animal Shelter recently teamed up with the Humane Society of Grand Bahama for "Operation Puppy Lift," which brought 14 pooches to safe haven. Grand Bahama only has one animal shelter, the Humane Society of Grand Bahama, and it is plagued with overcrowding issues. To that end, "Operation Puppy Lift" was launched to help give the canines a new start at life.

'Reach for the Stars' Winner Named

North Bellmore resident Kristen Murphy was crowned the winner at Monday's finals of the Nassau County "Reach for the Stars" contest at Eisenhower Park. Murphy, who used the song "Popular" to secure the victory, was among the 22 finalists chosen from an audition pool of 64 contestants. The annual competition showcases the county’s most talented young stars between the ages of 13 and 19, according to county executive Ed Mangano.
