Snow Heading Our Way

Officials urge caution.

Get ready for another blast of snow in Port Washington.

The National Weather Service's latest winter storm warning in effect from 7 p.m. Tuesday to 6 p.m. Wednesday. Snow accumulations could total 12 to 18 inches.  

Wind gusts are expected to reach as high as 35 miles per hour, causing poor visibility.

Chief William J. Kilfoil of the Port Washington Police Department asks drivers to avoid parking vehicles on the street as well as any unnecessary travel to allow road crews to clear the roads.

"If you must travel, please use extreme caution when driving and make sure all snow is cleared from your vehicle before driving," Kilfoil said in a message delivered through NorthShoreAlert, the peninsula's mass communication service. "Snow blowing off of vehicles can be dangerous and blinding to others on the roadway."

In an earlier NorthShoreAlert message, the Village of Port Washington North reminded residents that the the pending storm, atop "the already snow restricted streets will cause problems for emergency response."

Residents are asked to clear snow by directing it onto grass – not streets – so as to not to create "dangerous conditions and [violate] safety laws.

In addition, clear access to fire hydrants so that they are immediately accessible in in an emergency.
