  • Secure items outside the house, including flags
  • Have shovels handy and snowblowers ready.
  • Make sure to have enough bottled water for drinking and non-potable water for bathing and bathroom needs.
  • Check in on neighbors.
  • Have flashlights, batteries ready. Try to avoid using candles.
  • Wood for stoves should be under cover and close to the home.
  • When shoveling paths or driveways: work in shifts. Don't try to move everything all at once.
  • In the case of emergency, dial 911. Remember that it could take time to get to you due to road conditions.
  • Do not tailgate plows and sanders.
  • If on the roads, use extreme caution. Side roads and intersections may be impeded by snow. Consider staying at home Friday and Saturday.
  • In the case of a power outage, keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible. Check refrigerated food for spoilage and if in doubt, throw it out. Refrigerators will keep cold for about 4 hours. If the freezer is full, it will keep its temperature for about 48 hours.
  • Have coolers on hand and surround your food with ice in the cooler or refrigerator to keep food cold for a longer period of time. Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible.
  • Turn off and unplug all unnecessary electrical equipment and any appliances, equipment or electronics to avoid damaging them when the power is restored.
