Tough Commute to Port Washington on LIRR

Police limited access to Penn Station.

Long Island Rail Road passengers heading home to Port Washington faced a tough commute home Monday evening. Delays caused by a disabled train triggered overcrowding in Penn Station during the late afternoon rush, prompting Metropolitan Transit Authority Police to briefly limit access to Penn Station.

Commuters inside the station, however, had to navigate not only crowds, but train cancelations and track changes.

"As the announcement was made that the 6:11 train to Port Washington was canceled and combined with the 6:14, making all local stops, there was a crush of people heading toward Track 19," said Mike Roberts, a Port commuter.

"Those that dashed to the awaiting open doors were lucky to find seats as the cars filled quickly," he said.

By 6:21 p.m. access was restored to Penn Station. And though the disabled train has been moved, by 8 p.m., Port Washington commuters were still experiencing residual delays of 15 to 20 minutes in both directions.
