Varsity Choral Society’s Christmas Concert Is Sunday

The 22nd annual Christmas concert is dedicated to Ron Meadows.

The Varsity Choral Society will present its 22nd Annual Christmas Concert at the Congregational Church of Manhasset on Northern Boulevard on Sunday at 4 p.m.

This year's performance is dedicated to Ron Meadows, who passed away in August 2011. The long-time Port Washington resident was well-known figure to the local creative community. An active member of the board and long-time president of Port Play Troupe, Ron lent his lighting, sound, and recording expertise to countless local theatrical productions, Cancer Care’s and Varsity Choral Society Society's Concerts.

The Varsity Choral Society, under the direction of Craig Tocher, is an ensemble of talented amateur professional vocalists and instrumentalists from The Town of North Hempstead. This Sundays’ featured performers include organist Judith Feuss, and soloists’ contralto Melissa Maravell, of The New York City Opera and Jason Hendrix, a baritone from The Metropolitan Opera.

This Sunday’s concert opens with the American debut of the contemporary work Stella Natalis by Karl Jenkins.

Among the musical selections in the second half of the performance, the Choral Society will present “Goin Home - For Ron” - a special choral arrangement of spiritual-like song "Goin' Home," based on themes from Dvoraks’ New World Symphony, to be conducted by the arranger David Barnett.

Finally, as every year the performance concludes with an audience Christmas carol sing-a-long.

Tickets are $17.50, available at the door. The snow date is January 15, 2012.
