Veterans Honored at TONH Memorial Day Celebration

Military, music and fireworks delight crowd at North Hempstead Beach Park.

The sights and sounds of the military were in abundance Saturday evening as the Town of North Hempstead honored the nation's veterans at North Hempstead Beach Park in Port Washington. The Nassau County Police Department Pipe Band's rendition of The Marine's Hymn was a stirring tribute to our military's sacrifice. Rifle shots rang out with a salute from the U.S. Volunteers of America, 11th Regiment Firing Detail.

Indeed, sacrifice was the theme stressed by Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman, who led the celebration. "People die for all sorts of reasons," Kaiman said, "but when you die in the name of America, America must remember."

Guest speakers, including officials from local, state, and federal offices, echoed Kaiman's sentiment. Sen. Charles Schumer stressed the importance of supporting our service men and women, and promised that those currently serving in combat will be honored by our country. New York State Sen. Craig Johnson, referring to the military added, "They fight so that communities like this can come together in freedom and liberty."

Of the several hundred who gathered on the beach Saturday evening, many were visitors from around the region, and even newcomers to Port Washington. One family that recently moved to Port Washington was delighted with their choice. Steve and Amy Roth and their two sons, Zachery and Joshua, moved from Manhattan. "It's great in Port Washington," Steve said. "There's so much to do for young children. They get to play outside and have a much nicer environment than in the city, and my wife loves being close to the water."

A couple of late rain showers sent the crowd scattering, but they were brief and did not interrupt the program too much. Then, right on schedule at 9 p.m., the skies cleared beautifully for the fireworks, set to more rousing patriotic and classical music.

The crowd cheered as the fireworks burst into the shape of letters: "USA" was written across the sky in red, white and blue. The evening was indeed a memorable tribute to those who served — and still serve — our country.
