Week in Review

All the stories we hope you didn't miss this week.

The week started with a day off from academics for Port Washington students due to Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, but Schreiber hosted the 8th Annual Bob Busby Classic, an all-day wrestling tournament which featured the Vikings along with Manhasset, North Shore and Great Neck North high schools. After returning to school, a motion was passed by the Board of Education that puts the Port Washington Union Free School District in a rare breed, as one of the only districts on Long Island that can properly accept donations and sponsorships.

Sousa Elementary School hosted a two-day e-waste collection event, sponsored by the Town of North Hempstead, allowing residents to recycle their unwanted electronics, instead of simply tossing them in the trash. The town also recently launched a Port Washington satellite office for Project Independence, an initiative that provides daily life assistance for senior citizens who wish to remain in their own homes, instead of moving to assisted living communities. And Port resident Ted Jankowski, Nassau County's first appointed assessor, joined County Executive Ed Mangano's Assessment Review Team (ART).

Our newest columnist and local real estate agent Diane Schubach gave Port residents a peek into The Real Deal On Real Estate with some advice on the housing market heading into 2010.
