69th Commemoration of Hiroshima: "Time to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, Climate Change and War"

Hiroshima Commemoration in Manhasset Calls for Sanity,
Security and Survival

“It is Time to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, Climate Change and
War” is the theme for Great Neck SANE/Peace Action’s annual commemoration of
the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki 69 years ago. It is a call for sanity,
security and survival, as the world has become a more dangerous place.
Co-sponsoring the event are the Social Justice Committee of the UUCSR and the
Long Island Alliance for Peaceful Alternatives.

It is also a call to conscience to remind us, our
communities and our elected officials each year that we continue to face the
danger of nuclear annihilation. That action for nuclear disarmament is an
urgent necessity.  Climate change
presents another challenge of monumental proportions if the planet is to
survive. Wars have been costly in human life and treasure and have failed to
make us more secure or to achieve their stated objectives. Citizen action will
be an important part of this program which is dedicated to the memory of
Jonathan Schell, anti-nuclear activist, teacher, writer, and author of Fate of
the Earth.
