Miami Dogs Get New Lease on Life in Port Washington

Hundreds of lucky dogs leave Miami this week for no-kill shelters throughout the nation.

Heading down a highway near you, 201 lucky dogs left Miami bound for rescues and no-kill shelters throughout the country this week— including the North Shore Animal League in Port Washington.

Eight vans rolled out of Miami Dade Animal Services Nov. 13 marking the two year anniversary and 100th transport of the Dogs On The Move Program.

A group of dogs was scheduled to arrive Thursday morning in Port Washington. A message to the NAL was not immediately returned to Patch regarding the number of dogs and the breeds that arrived.

How they arrived at the 201 number: Two years muliplied by 100 transports plus one dog for "good luck," according to event organizers.

The massive undertaking was made possible by Miami Dogs on the Move and Miami-Dade Animal Services. MDAS takes in more than 30,000 unwanted pets per year and serves as the only public shelter for all of Miami-Dade County. As such, they are forced to euthanize pets for space when the shelter becomes over-crowded.  MDAS partnered with Dogs On The Move two years ago to create an innovative private/public partnership to transport animals and save more lives.

The happy pack of dogs will be relocated to 14 shelters across the U.S., including:

  • Russell Rescue in Nashville, Tenn.
  • North Brevard in Titusville, Fla.
  • Pick Your Paw in Shrewsbury, N.J.
  • Angle Capone in New York, N.Y.
  • Jackson County Humane Society in Maquoketa, Iowa
  • Baypath Humane Society in Hopkinton, Mass.
  • Animal Rescue League in Salem, N.H.
  • Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem, Mass.
  • Humane Society of Greater Nashua in Nashua, N.H.
  • Serendipity in Columbia, Mo.
  • A Heart For Animals in Huntley/Chicago, Ill.
  • In Our Hands Rescue in Bronx, N.Y.
  • Bright Star GSD Rescue in Rochester, N.Y.
