North Shore Animal League Rescues Animals Displaced by Isaac

Mobile units deployed; animals sent to Port Washington for adoption.

has deployed mobile units to Louisiana, helping to rescue animals in flooded parishes, according to the organization's website.

NSALA sent rescuers down to Louisiana after receiving alerts from Plaquemines Animal Welfare Society in Plaquemines Parish and Jefferson SPCA in Jefferson Parish. Coping with Isaac's wrath, rescuers there said the shelters were filled to capacity, and lacked the space to take in animals displaced by Isaac.

NSALA is working with The Greater Birmingham Humane Society in Alabama, helping to move the animals already in shelters to safety.

Many of these animals are headed to Port Washington for adoption.

Prior to the Isaac making landfall, NSALA received an alert from Humane Society of South Mississippi, and deployed units there who brought back dogs, cats, puppies and kittens to Port Washington for adoption.

A message posted NSALA's facebook page states: "Tonight the puppies and dogs saved from Hurricane Isaac have started to go up for adoption and more will be going up on Friday. The puppy mill dogs will be going up for adoption on Saturday at 10 AM."

Patch will have more on this story as it becomes available.

i believe the animals are brought here from the shelters to make room in the shelter for family pets displaced by the hurricane. the pets that were already at the shelter are the ones brought here to make room.
