Thousands Expected to 'Turkey Trot'

Pre-registration ends Wednesday for popular annual event.

Organizers are expecting thousands to participate in the annual Thanksgiving Day Run in Port Washington.

Sponsored by the Community Chest of Port Washington, the popular Turkey Trot will take place between 8:30-10:30 a.m. Thursday.

Some roads will be closed to traffic with up to 3,000 anticipated to jog, run or walk the five-mile course which starts at Manorhaven Beach Park.

Pre-registration fees through Wednesday are: $35 for adults; 18 and under $25. On race day: the adult fee is $50; 18 and under is $25. Minimum age to register in 9.

Number pick-up begins Tuesday from 5-8 p.m. at the Port Washington Senior Center, 80 Manorhaven Blvd. Additional pick-up dates are Wednesday from 5-9 p.m.; and Thursday from 7-8 a.m. at the senior center.

In-person registration will be available during number pickup only if race has not reached maximum capacity of 3,000.

Road closings by police are expected by police along the track which runs from Manorhaven Beach Park on Manorhaven Boulevard, continuing on Cow Neck Rd. to Middle Neck Road south to Port Washington Blvd. It will cut across down Sandy Hollow Road and Harbor Road, then back north onto Shore Road before returning to Manorhaven Boulevard. Residents north of Manorhaven Blvd. and Cow Neck Rd. will be unable to travel south during the road closures. 

In 2012, the event featured runners ranging from 82-year old Joan Hulkower of Port Washington to 9-year old Noreen Kelly of Centerport. The race winner 17-year-old Sidharth Kakkar of Port Washington who crossed the finish line at 26:12. The top woman finisher was Port's Kelsey Budd, 23, with a time of 31:27.
