Ruth A. Velleman, a Long-time Port Washington Resident, Dies

Active in the community, Velleman was 91.

Ruth A. Velleman, a 50-year resident of Port Washington, died on October 15, in Greenport, New York. She was 91.

In her early years in Port Washington, Velleman was active in the PTA and League of Women Voters, editing the newsletters of both organizations. She then earned a Master's degree in Library Science and, in 1963, became the librarian at Human Resources Center and School in Albertson, where she pioneered the field of library services for the disabled.Over the course of a 24-year career at Human Resources, she published two books and taught a graduate course in her field at the C.W. Post School of Library Science.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Moritz; sister Betty Jane Steinberg; sons Paul, J. David, and Dan J.; grandsons Daniel B., David J., Evan, and Zev; daughters-in-law Sue Michlovitz, Kitty Bridges, and Shelley Velleman; granddaughters-in-law Caitlin Stuff, Katharine Velleman, and Alexandra Graves; and great-grandson Elias Henry Graves Velleman.
