Illegal Parking

I realize that parking spots are at a premium in this town, but have to take issue with something.  It is illegal to park within 50 feet of a stop sign.  Several people I know in town have received tickets for this.  Ok, fine.  So how come there are several parking meters installed in this town, much less than 50 feet from several stop signs?  How can some people in town get tickets for allegedly breaking the law, while others are apparently allowed to break the law, as long as they pop in a quarter?
