LIRR staircase

The SouthWest staircase to the LIRR platform has been boarded up recently.  Does anyone know what is going on and when/if it will be back in service?

Aaron - thank you for the information. Many people who walk to the train on a daily basis rely on that staircase. This will increase commute time to walk to the other end of the train. How and when will the LIRR consult with the community?

Also, does this have anything to do with the project to build additional track(s)?

It would concern anyone, not only the many hundreds of passengers walking to the station and now inconvenienced by LIRR's deferred station maintenance, that an LIRR "official" statement equates access from the southwest access bridge to access via the east side of station midspan bridge -- an additional four block/800 foot walk to the station head (or 1200 feet around to the alternate bridge, but why?). Isn't this really just a way of making the west side parking lot less attractive, so it can be closed for re-purposing as an extension of Track 1, to facilitate more service associated with the East Side Access project?

Do our elected officials know ANYTHING before it is foist as a fait accompli on us? PSEG's shafting, now condemned LIRR access?
