Should there be stricter enforcement to keep dogs from playgrounds, when signs prohibit their presence there?

Patch heard from a number of parents who were concerend about reports of a Port Washington boy who allegedly had his earlobe mauled by a mixed lab at the playground at .

A sign posted at the Sousa playground entrance prohibit dog walking on school property.

Which leads to the question: Is this sort of incident preventable? How can dog owners be more responsible around children? What should parents tell their children?
