Question Of The Day: Hiring A New Superintendent

What qualities do you think are most important?

After 10 years, Dr. Geoffrey Gordon will retire from his role as superintendent of Port Washington Public Schools.

Which leads to the question: what issues are most critical in the search to find the next superintendent? What qualities do you think the best candidate should possess in leading the district forward? Tell us in the comments.

Firstly, he/she must like a lot of money and a job with great perks and benefits. Why can't the School Board work directly with the Principals and asst Principals and run the schools? Each school has a Principal and assistants. Why another layer of bureaucracy? The School Board should oversee operations, like an active Board of Directors.

I think that it is very important that no matter who we hire we do not offer this new person a pension or the opportunity for tenure. The system needs serious structural reforms - all reform needs to start at the top, and it is very hard if not impossible to implement those reforms when you yourself are part of the system that needs reforming.

A good leader that will cut spending. Also, bring the district up to date with technology. Horribly outdated website! Needs a huge overhaul.
