A Suffolk County police officer shot and killed a man who ran from a car at a routine traffic stop and pulled a gun in Bay Shore early Friday morning, authorities said.
No other injuries were reported.
Police said two Third Precinct patrol officers initiated a traffic stop for vehicle and traffic violations at 12:02 a.m. on Howells Road. Of the three occupants in the vehicle, the front-seat passenger, Andres Morales, ran from the vehicle and one of the officers pursued him on foot.
A confrontation between Morales and the officer ensued, and Morales displayed a handgun, according to police. The officer, fearing for his life, shot two rounds and struck Morales twice in the torso, police said.
Morales, 27, of Bay Shore, was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner, police said.
Suffolk Police have not yet identified the police officer.
