Crime Nearby: Man Arrested in $20,000 Watch Theft

Some of the crimes reported around Long Island communities this week.

A Patek Philippe wristwatch allegedly stolen from a Kings Point home got a Westbury man collared, Nassau Police said.

Leayon Tallman, 37, was arrested Monday and charged with third degree grand larceny related to a June 15 theft at an East Road residence in Kings Point.

Tallman, employed as a repairman for Action Repair Service of Merrick, was sent to the Kings Point residence to service an air conditioning unit, police said.

A 59-year-old male victim and police allege that Tallman took a $20,000 wristwatch from a bedroom closet while in the home checking an electrical panel.

The watch was later discovered at an East Meadow pawn shop by Nassau Police detectives conducting routine review. Police said a friend of Tallman’s who had no knowledge of the theft pawned the watch. It has since been recovered.

Huntington

A Huntington Station woman with her 6-year-old son in the back seat was arrested and charged with aggravated DWI early Sunday after she crashed into a parked car, Suffolk County Police said.

According to police, Yessica Campos-Gomez, 21, was observed slumped over in her vehicle after striking a car along Bayview Drive in Huntington. An officer from the made the determination Campos-Gomez was under the influence of alcohol and made the arrest. No one was injured in the crash, police said.

Campos-Gomez was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated with a passenger 15 years old or younger (Leandra’s Law), driving while intoxicated and endangering the welfare of a child.

Northport

Suffolk Police arrested three clerks late Friday for selling alcohol to minors at stores in Commack, Huntington Station and East Northport. An additional man was arrested for offering to buy alcohol for a minor, police said.

Crime Section and Community Oriented Police Enforcement officers conducted state Liquor Authority checks at six area convenience stores between 9:15-11:15 p.m. Clerks at three of the stores failed inspection and sold alcohol to undercover agents.

Northport

Paige Daiuto, 22, of Mastic was arrested at a Northport business on July 25 at 11:23 p.m. and charged with third-degree assault with intent after she allegedly smashed a beer bottle of someone's head during a fight, causing a laceration that required medical treatment.

Melville

Police are seeking the public's help to identify and locate three men who allegedly stole three bales of cardboard and two flats from Costco in Melville, which were scheduled to be picked up for recycling.

According to the Second Precinct Crime Section, at sometime between 11:45 p.m. on July 17 and 2:15 a.m. on July 18, three men drove a U-Haul box truck to the rear parking lot of the Costco store at 625 Broadhollow Road in Melville. The three subjects took the flats and the bales of cardboard, which were set aside for recycling, loaded the items into the box truck and drove away. The incident was captured on surveillance video.

Lindenhurst

Suffolk Police have arrested a North Lindenhurst man for the Monday, July 24,  robbery of  on East Sunrise Highway. 

Mark Brown, 35, was picked up by the SCPD two days later on July 26, and was charged with robbery in the third degree, police said.

Massapequa

A man who was boating in the waters off Massapequa was busted over the weekend for opearating the vessel while intoxicated, authorities said.

Timothy O'Keefe, 25, was picked up at 8:25 p.m. Saturday night by Town of Oyster Bay constables.

He's been charged with operating a vessel while intoxicated and unlawful possession of marijuana, according to court documents.

He was ordered held on $15,000 bond or $7,000 cash at his arraignment on Sunday, according to the Nassau County District Attorney's office.

Massapequa

Crystal Bowden, 49, of Amityville was arrested July 19 at the Pathmark at 941 Carmans Road, East Massapequa and charged with reckless endangerment and petty larceny, police said. She allegedly tried to leave without paying and was confronted by a loss prevention officer. Bowden struck the store employee with her car while trying to leave causing leg injuries, police said.

Levittown

A Suffolk man armed with a knife allegedly forced his way into a Levittown home last week and stole from a couple, Nassau Police said.

According to detectives, William Christ, 58, of West Babylon went to the victims' home brandishing a large knife. He allegedly pointed it at the female victim, 30, and punched her several times in the head and face. 

The defendant then pointed the knife at the male victim, 31, took his wallet along with the female victim’s pocket book, left the residence and fled the scene in an unknown direction in his car. The defendant was known to the victims, police stated. 

Nassau police arrested the defendant at his West Babylon residence without incident.

Riverhead

A Jamesport man who reportedly tried to flee police in December and injured a police officer during a crash following a car chase, pleaded guilty before Judge Stephen Braslow at Suffolk County criminal court on Monday.

Edward Ferger, 47, is charged with felony assault in the second degree, as well as vehicular assault in the second degree. He was indicted by a Suffolk County grand jury in March.

In the was injured; his cruiser was totaled.

Montauk

When a Montauk woman returned to her car that was parked outside of the Memory Motel on Montauk Highway on July 13, she found that $2,600 in cash was missing from her purse, which she left on the back seat. She told police she had locked her car, but found it unlocked. The car also had new scratches around it. However, as it turned out, the woman's father had actually taken the money to teach his daughter a lesson about not leaving her valuables susceptible to being stolen. He told police he did not intend for the incident to be reported to police.

The woman said she would be more careful, a police report said.
