Crimes Nearby: Gilgo Beach, Hostage Situation And More

Babylon

No new evidence or clues were discovered during Monday’s six-hour beach search along Ocean Parkway in the ongoing Gilgo Beach serial killer investigation and the missing person case of Shannan Gilbert, according to Suffolk Police.

Further searches are expected, though no specific dates have been set, police said.

Suffolk Police Commissioner Richard Dormer  Patch last week that the theory now is that one Long Island male killed eight women, a male and toddler and that Gilbert's disappearance is likely not related. Police say it's possible Gilbert is dead and that her body could be somewhere in the beach brush along the parkway. The killer likely began his deadly spree 15 years ago and is a Long Island man knowledgeable about remote terrain in Nassau and Suffolk counties, Dormer said.

Westbury

An emotionally disturbed person with a gun took a hostage inside a room at the Hostway Motor Inn at 101 Jericho Turnpike at about 4:22 a.m. on Nov. 29. The situation was resolved by Nasasau County Police, who took two suspects into custody. No injuries were reported.

Garden City

An 18-year-old Garden City man’s attempt to avoid police proved unsuccessful at 3 a.m. on Nov. 27. When stopped the suspect vehicle fled the scene, passing several stop signs before hitting a parked vehicle and a tree where he was apprehended and placed under arrest. The suspect was charged with aggravated DWI, unlawful fleeing of a police officer, reckless driving, unsafe start, speeding and several stop sign violations.

Glen Cove police reported the following from Nov. 20 - Nov. 26, 2011.

  • An 18-year-old male was charged with assault (third degree) on Eldridge Place on Nov. 21.
  • A 36-year-old male was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation (second degree) on Sea Cliff Avenue on Nov. 21.
  • A 34-year-old male was charged with aggravated unlicensed operation (second degree) on St. Andrews Lane on Nov. 25.
  • A 42-year-old female was charged with DWI on Cedar Swamp Road on Nov. 26.

Plainview

Nassau police detectives report a  in the northeastern portion of Nassau County are continuing, including at least three new burglaries last weekend in Plainview, four more in Syosset and one in Woodbury.

This latest report addes to a string of burglaries have been reported in recent weeks in Plainview, Woodbury, Hicksville, and Syosset.

Malverne-West Hempstead

The Roslyn Savings Bank located at 50 Hempstead Turnpike was nearly robbed for the second time in less than a month on Monday afternoon.

According to Nassau County detectives, around 1:08 p.m., a black male suspect, approximately 6 feet tall, 30 to 40 years old, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and baseball cap, entered the bank. The suspect walked up to one of the tellers and appeared to begin preparing a demand note.

The employee walked away, causing the man to flee the bank emptyhanded on Hempstead Turnpike, police said.

Less than one month ago, on Nov. 14, a man, fitting the same description as the suspect in Monday's attempted robbery,  an undisclosed amount of cash from the same bank.

A Uniondale teen has been charged in the  that occurred in West Hempstead Tuesday morning. Daritza Lopez, 18, faces , vehicular manslaughter, driving while intoxicated and aggravated unlicensed operation of motor vehicle in the third degree.
