DA: 2 Years Probation for Woman Aiming to Sell Shelter Dogs on Craigslist for Profit

A Central Islip woman charged with filing false documents in order to adopt shelter dogs to resell for a profit on Craigslist was sentenced Tuesday, authorities said.

Lisette Tobon, 23 was sentenced Tuesday to two years probation, according to the Nassau County District Attorney’s office.

Tobon pleaded guilty in May to one count of second-degree offering a false instrument, the Nassau DA’s office said.

As Patch has reported, Tobon was arrested on March 14 for adopting “Willow,” a Pekinese from the Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter in Port Washington in November 2013 and was later charged with selling the dog for $200 via Craigslist.

In the Town of North Hempstead adoption contract, Tobon agreed not to give away, sell, or dispose of the dog without the consent of the shelter, the DA’s office said back in March. Tobon also agreed to another condition in the contract, which stated shelter staff had the right to follow up on the adoption by making a personal visit to the premises of the adopter to check up on the animal.

Tobon also attempted to adopt another dog from the same shelter, as well as the Town of Babylon animal shelter in West Babylon, but was denied.
