DA: Woman Charged with Selling Shelter Dog on Craigslist Pleads Guilty

A Central Islip woman who made false claims in order to sell a shelter dog for profit pleaded guilty Tuesday before a Nassau County judge, authorities said.

Lisette Tobon, 23, is scheduled to be sentenced on July 15. She pleaded guilty Tuesday to one count of second-degree offering a false instrument, the Nassau County District Attorney’s office said.

Tobon was arrested on March 14 for adopting “Willow,” a Pekinese from the Town of North Hempstead Animal Shelter in Port Washington in November 2013 and was later charged with selling the dog for $200 via Craigslist. 

Tobon also attempted to adopt another dog from the same shelter, as well as the Town of Babylon animal shelter in West Babylon, but was denied, the Nassau DA’s office said.

Tobon is expected to be sentenced to two years probation, the DA's office said.
