Banned Volunteers Win Animal Shelter Lawsuit
After two years of ongoing litigation, the three banned volunteer animal rescue workers from Hempstead Town Animal Shelter have won their case against the town. The plaintiffs -- Diane Madden of East Meadow, Lucille DeFina of Merrick and Frances Lucivero‐Pelletier of Levittown -- accepted an offer of judgment that their lawyer, Steven Morelli, referred to as a "total victory against the Town of Hempstead, Town Supervisor Kate Murray and various town officials."
Off-Duty Police Officer Killed in Crash
An off-duty Suffolk County police officer was killed early Friday morning in a crash along Jericho Turnpike in Commack, police said. Patrick Curley, of Huntington, was driving an SUV west on Route 25, near Siracusa Boulevard, when his vehicle collided with a Winters Brothers garbage truck that was backing out of a business onto Route 25 at 3:33 a.m, according to police.
Chief Nursing Officer Joins Good Samaritan Hospital
Jeanne K. Dzurenko was recently appointed Senior Vice President of Nursing and Chief Nursing Officer at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center. Dzurenko comes to Good Sam with more than 25 years experience in nursing and healthcare operations. In her new role, she is responsible for the administrative and organizational plan for nursing care and patient outcomes. Previously, Dzurenko served as the senior director of nursing operations, patient care systems at NYU Langone Medical Center.
Target Plans to Open Store in October
Target plans to open its Huntington Station store by October, creating about 250 jobs in the process, the discount retailer said Friday. The store, under construction on the site of the former Huntington Townhouse, will feature a significant grocery component.
Suffolk Police Taking Tips by Text
The Suffolk County Police Department has announced a new effort to receive more anonymous crime tips with greater ease from local residents – via text message. The police department's new "Text-A-Tip" service aims to serve as a confidential way for Suffolk County residents to send crime details or tips to Crime Stoppers without any recourse. All submissions, just as calls to Crime Stoppers, remain completely anonymous.
