NorthShoreAlert: Trees Down and Roads Blocked

Police are asking residents to stay indoors.

Here is a message from NorthShoreAlert, a mass communication system for the peninsula, sent at 11:55 a.m.. To sign up for messages, visit NorthShoreAlert.org.

Good morning. The police would like to update you and make a request.

Firstly, the peninsula, so far, has suffered expected damage related to a typical heavy storm.

Currently, two-thirds of the peninsula (with over 10,000 homes) has no power. There are widespread outages across the island with over 415,000 homes affected.
It may not be known until after the storm has passed when restoration will occur.
If you have an outage please do not call the police. You can report it to LIPA at 800-490-0025. Or you can report it at lipower.org/stormcenter.

Secondly, there are numerous road blockages from trees and flooding including portions of Middle Neck Rd in Sands Point, Shore Rd in PW, around Leeds Pond, and many other locations.
Public Safety is already working to clear as many of blockages as they can. For the remainder of this storm, there is no need to call the police to report blocked streets.

Be aware that downed trees are often entangled with live power lines!

The storm seems to be weakening and may be breaking up late this morning. Please check with the media for current info.

Until then please, please stay indoors and call the police only for an emergency. Trees are still falling and conditions are hazardous.
