Port Washington Firefighters battling big blaze across from LIRR station

Port Washington firefighters are battling a major fire in a Main Street building across from the LIRR station.

Flames have been seen bursting through the roof of the building and the area around the fire scene has been cordoned off.

Firefighters from surrounding communities are assisting; at least three tower ladders are in operation.

This is a breaking story; Patch will provide updates as they become available.

Amazing how ungrateful you are to have a fire dept. full of people willing to leave a paying job to risk their lives for people they don't know. Can you really put a price on fire protection? I would pay whatever they asked for and then some! My hats off to the men & women willing to risk life & limb to save me! THANK YOU TO PWFD!

The PWFD is great and they are one of the real assets of this community. They deserve our thanks and praise.

Stupid question...do you have fire fighting experience beyond putting out a simple camp fire..? No..? Ok then you cant comment btw doesnt Port Washington has one of the lowest fire insurance rates because of how well the fire department here works?
William Lewis March 14, 2013 at 11:04 PM
Richard, just to let you know, Port Washington has one of the lowest fire insurance rates in the country. Our fire department is manned by local residents who are freely giving up their time and risking their lives to protect our town. Don’t forget the building is old, the wood is dry and the wind does not help matters. And for the safety of the fire fighters the blaze HAD to be fought from the exterior. Before you open your mouth to attack the fire department in how they fight a fire, maybe you should join them and go to fire school. I know I am more than thankful for having these great men and women who step up to the plate to protect us. If you had any common sense you should be too.

Richard, just to let you know and to repeat after the negative comment you made on Victoria's post, Port Washington has one of the lowest fire insurance rates in the country. Our fire department is manned by local residents who are freely giving up their time and risking their lives to protect our town. Don’t forget the building is old, the wood is dry and the wind does not help matters. And for the safety of the fire fighters the blaze HAD to be fought from the exterior. whaddya expect from a guy named DICK JOHNSON?
tommy john March 14, 2013 at 11:58 PM
thank you to the PWFD. TG nobody was hurt. This was the second major loss of property in five years. the other being the office building on Bayles. (lost tax revenue) But on the positive side, Yea! maybe more commuter parking when they tear the building down and the town buys it for million$! And I am only half kidding.
mememe meme March 15, 2013 at 12:09 AM
Tell that to the people who live there and worked there about turning it to a parking lot, Tommy. Tell you what, we set YOUR home and/or job ablaze then turn it to commuter parking and see if you still think it as a positive side I'm only half kidding of course...
tommy john March 15, 2013 at 12:34 AM
mememe meme. are you/ we threatening to commit arson on my home? i am going to contact the PWPD and have you arrested.
mememe meme March 15, 2013 at 12:45 AM
Did anyone see me actually threaten? Cause I'm pretty sure I said I'm only half joking...much like you said you were half joking. What Tommy, you dont enjoy your own style thrown back at you..?
Christina A March 15, 2013 at 12:59 AM
Mr Johnson I challenge you to give up the thousands of hours I have spent in my life to learn how to save yours. I just got home from the fire and my husband is still there fighting it. Are you comfy home on your iPad?
tommy john March 15, 2013 at 01:12 AM
mememe meme. it is not my style to threaten to burn down sombody's home. When you say you were half kidding, which half of my home were you threatening to burn down?
mememe meme March 15, 2013 at 01:14 AM
Again did anyone see me actually threaten? Cause I'm pretty sure I said I'm only half joking...much like you said you were half joking. What Tommy, you dont enjoy your own style thrown back at you..?
tommy john March 15, 2013 at 01:21 AM
you wrote "we set your home and/or job ablaze" That is a threat. Or at least half a threat. And I am not half joking
mememe meme March 15, 2013 at 01:22 AM
And yet your comment said half joking. So not only do you not enjoy your style thrown back at you, we cant go by what you say. Got it

Mr. Johnson until the day comes that you hear the PWFD tones come over your own pager and you run out your door be it during the day or the middle of the night on a weekday, weekend, holiday, birthday, anniversary, etc.... To fight a fire for hours on end in the cold, in the heat, on a windy day or any other type of weather you can possibly think of or to go get an ambulance out to respond to a perfect strangers home to help them to the hospital then you can have something to say. You Sir don't get the right to belittle the Port Washington Fire Department my family and friends until you have even donned fire gear which by the way you are not worthy of. And keep in mind Kharma sucks and one of these days you will need the men and women of the PWFD and I guarentee their excellence and professionalism even when they have to deal with an ignorant person like yourself will make you eat every single one of your judgemental words. I hope you have a very nice day becareful out there
Silvana Zangri March 15, 2013 at 01:20 PM
The only incompetence here is Mr. Johnson. Laughable that you make comments about three trucks a block from the fire and they weren't able to put it out. Did the neighborhood go up in flames? No...know why? Because they contained it. Did anyone did? No...know why? Because they got everyone out safely. You talk about a costly fire dept? Call Garden City...let them tell you how it's going for them. Stop talking like an ignorant fool and get your facts straight. I challenge you to volunteer and learn how to fight a fire...even if its just to watch you smolder a smoking ashtray. I challenge you to walk in those boots and then revisit this post.

Richard Johmson is probably not originally from Port Washington. He is just a clueless spoiled rotten grown up gimmie gimmie gimmie brat that lives with his head up his back end. He wouldnt survive a day with the training they have to go through. I may not live there now but I still carry my pride. We dont need people like him in our town.
Jason Molinet March 15, 2013 at 04:07 PM
We promised you an update on cause. The latest from Nassau County Police: http://portwashington.patch.com/articles/cops-roofers-torch-triggered-fire

I want to thank everyone involved in helping contain the fire :-) exellent work!
Michele Johnson March 15, 2013 at 07:49 PM
There is a problem when you have a common name like Johnson. We just want everyone to know that the Richard Johnson who left this unfortunate message is NOT the Dr. Richard Johnson who has lived in this community for 25 years and whose father was a proud NYC fireman. We hope there is no case of mistaken identity and hope that these unkind words are NOT ATTRIBUTED TO DR. RICHARD JOHNSON.
Adina Genn (Editor) March 15, 2013 at 08:36 PM
There is more than one Richard Johnson in Port Washington, so please, if you encounter a Richard Johnson in town, do not assume it was the one who left the comment that has upset people.

Volunteer Firefighters: UNPAID PROFESSIONALS. The PWFD IS NO LESS A REAL FD THAN FDNY, OR ANY OTHER FIRE DEPT.. They go through the same training. Fire is fire. I guarantee you, Mr. Johnson, that if it were you needing the services of the PWFD, whatever the emergency, Your needs would be taken care of with the utmost professionalism, courtesy, and compassion. You, Sir, need to wake up and get your head out of your ass. Until you have walked in those boots and seen firsthand what it is these folks go through so you can sit there behind your keyboard and slam them... Shut up, sit there and just pretend to be stupid.
cableguy March 16, 2013 at 12:00 AM
I see Mr. Johnson's post has been deleted.
