Police Warn About Burglary Scams

Cops say transients are breaking into Nassau County homes.

Nassau County residents are being warned to look out for groups of burglars who are scamming their way into people's homes.

Police issued a warning earlier this week saying an organized group of transient criminals has been committing break-ins in the area.

They usually drive into residential neighborhoods in a car or van with out of state license plates, cops said. One of them poses as a surveyor or a contractor and tries to lure the  homeowner into the backyard, while his partner sneaks into the home and robs it.

Cops said area homeowners should take precautions including:

  • Making  sure that doors and windows are locked even when someone is home.
  • Turning on alarm systems whenever the house is empty.
  • Locking valuables in safes and not leaving cash or jewelry in conspicuous areas like counters, bedrooms or kitchens.
