Police: Wrong Way Driver from Port Washington Arrested for DWI in Wantagh

Driver observed eastbound in the westbound lanes on Sunrise Highway in Bellmore.

A Port Washington man was arrested by police in Wantagh early Monday morning and charged with driving while intoxicated after he was observed driving in the wrong direction on Sunrise Highway in Bellmore.

At 2:10 a.m. a Nassau County Police Ambulance Technician observed a driver operating a 2010 Toyota Corolla eastbound in the westbound lanes on Sunrise Highway in Bellmore. The vehicle, operated by Evan Jay, 25, of Port Washington, then proceeded in the correct direction northbound on the Wantagh Parkway.

Nassau County Police were notified of the driver and apprehended Jay on the Wantagh Parkway in Wantagh. Police discovered that the defendant was operating under the influence alcohol. No injuries were reported.

Jay was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated (a blood alcohol of .18 or higher), driving while intoxicated and failure to stay in a single lane. He will be arraigned Monday at First District Court in Hempstead.
