Port Washington Police: Crosswalk Safety Event is July 31

The initiative aims to enhance pedestrian safety, officials said.

The Port Washington Police District is holding a crosswalk safety event on Thursday, July 31, officials said. 

The event is part of of the district's "Pedestrian Education, Enforcement, and Traffic Solutions," or PEETS, program. The district is launching this program to help make it safer for pedestrians to cross the street. 

Funding for the effort comes from the Police Services Grant through the Nassau County Traffic Safety Board and is provided by the New York State Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee.

The initiative will combine aggressive law enforcement with education and low-cost engineering to get more drivers to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks, encourage pedestrians to use crosswalks, increase civility and create a more livable, walkable community.
