Port Washington Schools Are Open; Drive Carefully

Safety tips for drivers and pedestrians.

The signs are up around town: school’s open, drive carefully.

That means stopping for schools buses with blinking red lights. And yes, hands-free cell phone usage is the law, but as pointed out by Safe Kids Worldwide, which has a coalition led by North Shore-LIJ in Great Neck, even hands-free usage can come with distractions that can lead to accidents.

To further prevent distractions, Safe Kids Worldwide recommends that students take off their headphones when crossing roads, and stop walking if they need to use their cell phones. And since drivers may also be distracted, walkers should seek to make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the street.

AAA New York which has offices in Garden City, recommends that students cross only at corners, watch for turning cars, and never cross between parked cars – that's especially vital for small children who may be difficult for drivers to see.

As for drivers, AAA recommends slowing down near schools, bus stops and playgrounds; and obeying lower speed limits in school zones.
