Port Washington Wins AAA's Top Platinum Award

The community was honored for its traffic safety programs.

Port Washington won AAA’s top Platinum Award for the outstanding effectiveness of its traffic safety programs.

The community was one of four winners in AAA’s annual Community Traffic Safety Awards Program, which recognizes outstanding organizations, individuals and communities for their efforts to make the region’s roadways safer for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians.

Over the past five years, Port Washington demonstrated a 75 percent reduction in bicycle injuries, and seat belt usage at or above 97 percent. Other successful traffic safety initiatives include the Pedestrian Crosswalk Safety Program, Operation Buckle Up Program and STOP-DWI Program. Port Washington was also awarded a Pedestrian Safety Citation for having three years without a pedestrian fatality.

AAA honored Port Washington for its safety efforts on Oct. 25 at a luncheon ceremony at The Carltun in East Meadow. Other winners include Garden City, as well as Pleasantville and White Plains in Westchester County.
