Senior Prank at Schreiber High School

A fire alarm, firecrackers, and word of rabbits and frogs roaming the building.

It seems senior pranks can be somewhat of an annual tradition at . And this year was no exception.

At around 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, some seniors made their mark. It involved a building evacuation and fireworks. There was even talk of rabbits and frogs let loose in the building once the school was emptied out.

Port Washington School Superintendent Dr. Geoffrey Gordon set the record straight. “Basically a student pulled a fire alarm and a second student set off firecrackers off of school grounds,” he said.

Jim Salerno said the fireworks were triggered around the woods area, off campus.

As a result of the prank, 1,500 or more students and staff waited for about an hour on this nearly 100-degree day in designated locations outside the school building

The National Weather Service had issued a heat advisory Thursday, prompting County Executive Ed Mangano to advise residents to take precautions to stay cool.

But students had to remain outdoors for about an hour until responders gave the building the all clear.

Gordon described the students as “exceptionally good in many ways,” adding that the episode affected the Schreiber community because of “a poor decision by one or two students.”

Calls to the Port Washington Fire Department for comment were not immediately returned.

Now, there is an investigation to find those behind the prank “and have the consequences of both the police and school applied,” Gordon said.

As for those animals set free in the school?

Said Gordon: “No frogs and rabbits to the best of my knowledge.”
