SUV Causes Crash on Port Washington Boulevard

Multiple witnesses say morning crash involved drugs; police won't confirm.

An early-morning car accident involving a BMW SUV and a construction truck snarled traffic along Port Washington Boulevard near Delaware Avenue and Beverly Road well into the afternoon.

At around 7:30 a.m., a six-truck convoy from Dom's Tree Service was traveling on Port Washington Boulevard to a construction site in White Plains when the SUV, traveling close to 100 mph, swerved into the lead truck, knocking it forcefully onto the sidewalk.

"From what I understand, the driver had drugs and drug paraphernalia in his car at the time of the crash," said Dominick D'Alonzo, the owner of Dom's Tree Service. "I am just glad no one got killed."

A Dom's Tree Service employee who was part of the convey described the BMW as being "out of control." According to witnesses, the BMW hit the truck so hard that it almost flipped over. The BMW wound up underneath the construction truck.

The car was so badly damaged that members of the Port Washington Fire Department reportedly spent close to 45 minutes cutting the male driver out of the vehicle. Members of the fire department, as well as the Port Washington and Nassau County police, responded to the scene.

The SUV driver was transported to an area hospital. Police wouldn't reveal his condition. The driver of the construction truck was apparently unscathed.

Port Washington Police Chief James Salerno said the accident is currently under investigation.

"We will have a report of the accident on Monday, pending investigation," he said.

Multiple eyewitnesses however said drugs were involved in the accident.
