A Green Challenge, Jack Frost Seminar

Have you retrofitted your home recently? Then you may qualify for the Town of North Hempstead “Energize Long Island Challenge” As part of the Long Island Green Homes Consortium, North Hempstead homeowners completing the installation of energy efficiency retrofits through the Home Performance with Energy Star, Weatherization Assistance Program, or EmPower New York from Aug. 1, 2012-May 15, 2013 are eligible to enter into a grand prize drawing.

Eligible residents will be entered into a monthly drawing of all homes with energy retrofits completed during that month. The contest runs from Oct. 17, 2012-May 15, 2013, with a grand prize drawing held in early June 2013.

Long Island Green Homes in North Hempstead provides residents with a program to retrofit homes to reduce energy costs and improve energy efficiency. It is open to all homeowners of one-to-four family homes.  The audit is free for families whose annual income below is $215,000 the audit is free, and offered at a reduce rate for families earning up to $430,000.

Get started by completing a quick energy audit application available through the town. Based on the results of the audit, the contractor will prepare and provide the resident with a report that contains a list of recommended improvements along with the cost of the improvements and the estimated energy and cost savings. Residents will have an opportunity to work with the contractor to decide which energy efficiency measures to install.

Up to $25,000 of improvements can be financed through a Home Performance with Energy Star loan from NYSERDA at a low interest rate, as well as On-bill Recovery Loan, repaid through an installment charge on the resident’s utility bill. In addition, many of the measures are eligible for rebates or other financial incentives from LIPA, National Grid, and NYSERDA.

Get Ready for Jack Frost

The 9th Annual, “Getting Ready For Jack Frost!” seminar on winter health and safety will be held  Friday, 11 a.m.-2 p.m., at the Port Washington Senior Center.

Lunch, games and seasonal fun follow the presentation. All North Hempstead residents age 60 or older are welcome. For reservations call 311 or 869-6311.
