Eco Events Draw Strong Response

Town of North Hempstead notebook: Town collects 10 tons of e-waste, 1,200 pounds of unwanted pharmaceuticals.

Two recent Town of North Hempstead eco-friendly events showed how the town is cleaning up in different ways.

EcoFest drew more than 5,000 locals to Clark Botanical Garden in Albertson April 27-28, part of the town’s month-long environmental education effort. More significantly, it signaled the reopening of the Botanical Garden, which suffered extensive damage from Hurricane Sandy.

The town also hosted a Stop Throwing Out Pollutants event earlier in the month, collecting nearly 10 tons of e-waste, six tons of shredded paper, one ton of clothing and household items and 1,200 pounds of old or unwanted medication.

The Tully Park event collected twice the amount of shredded paper and pharmaceuticals compared with a year earlier.

“The improper disposal of household hazardous products can have a devastating effect on the health and safety of our town for now and future generations,” Town Supervisor Jon Kaiman said. “This is why we offer residents this environmentally friendly way to dispose of household hazardous waste.”

The next STOP event will be held June 8 at North Hempstead Beach Park at 9:30 a.m. Call 311 for more information.
