Health Fair, Aging in Place Seminar

Two upcoming North Hempstead events focus on seniors in the community.

This week’s Funday Monday will feature at North Hempstead Beach Park in Port Washington brings the town’s annual health education fair, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

This fair provides residents practical assistance in wide-ranging areas of physical, emotional, recreational and financial health’ gives attendees the opportunity to participate in a variety of screenings and obtain useful information from professionals such as doctors, nurses, attorneys, and advocates. Residents can also bring their list of medications and ask the pharmacist about the best way to take medication.

Exhibitors include the American Red Cross, Assemb. Chuck Lavine (D-Glen Cove), Assemb. Michelle Schimel (D-Great Neck), Delux Transportation, Long Island Cares Harry Chapin Food Bank, Meals on Wheels, NICE- Able Ride, North Shore LIJ- Health System, and various services offered by the Town of North Hempstead including Project Independence, 311 Call Center, Receiver of Taxes Charles Berman, the Animal Shelter and Solid Waste Management Authority.

'Aging in Place in Suburbia’ Conference

The Town of North Hempstead is co-hosting the second regional “Aging in Place in Suburbia” conference and expo: “Aging in Place in Suburbia: Living Better with Technology.”

“Yes We Can” Community Center, 141 Garden Street in Westbury.

Rep. Steve Israel will deliver the keynote address.

More than 70 exhibitors will provide information using technology to impact senior care, transportation & travel, home construction, safety, fitness, socialization, and other essential areas of particular concern for Long Islanders who want to remain in their own homes as they age.

Some of the newest technological advances will be on display including demonstrations of telemedicine by North Shore LIJ; instruction on using an IPad or mobile device to monitor your health’ and Smart Homes, which can tell you your blood pressure and other health information anywhere in your home.

In addition to the town’s Project Independence, co-sponsors include

The National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University, Lawrence Levy, Executive Dean; Martine Hackett, Special Assistant Professor of Health Professions, and North Shore-LIJ Health System, Michael Dowling, President and CEO. 

The event will also feature authors including Hal Spielman, who wrote “Suddenly Solo:  A Lifestyle Road Map for the Mature Widowed or Divorced Man”; Abby Stokes, who wrote “Is This Thing On?”, a computer handbook for seniors; and Katherine Bouton who penned “Shouting Won’t Help:  Why I—and 50 Million Other Americans—Can’t Hear You,” which discusses the newest assistive devices for the hearing impaired.

Transportation will be available from various locations throughout the town. There will be a free lunch voucher for the first 500 attendees. To register, call 311.
